Arr Flair delivers knockout blow

It’s fair to say Arr Flair came to Singapore with some high hopes after being secured privately from Australia as stakes performer, but for whatever reasons, he has been unable to break through for victory – until Friday night.

Trainer Steve Burridge had Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michael Rodd in the saddle in the opening event of the night and once the gates opened, Arr Flair was allowed to settle with only three behind him in the run.

Leader Hot Gold, trained by Cliff Brown, went many lengths clear ensuring the tempo was on from the get go, but Rodd never panicked as he allowed Arr Flair to travel where he was comfortable in the run.

As the home turn was approaching, and Hot Gold was still clear, Rodd asked the son of Dash For Cash for an effort and the gelding started to work his way off heels and out into clear running.

With 300m to go, Arr Aflair was still about eight lengths off the winner, but was making ground at a rate of knots.

When the line was reached it was Arr Flair by a length and a quarter in what turned out to be a relatively easy victory.
