Knife To The Sword As Excalibur Aims For Derby Glory

After a slashing run to take second in the Group 1 Patron’s Bowl, the second leg of the Singapore Four-year-old Series when coming from back of the field, Elite Excalibur has the right form on the board to record success this Sunday in the big one.

Initially trained in Australia by Gai Waterhouse for Coolmore Australia, the then named River Wild was a winner of three of his eight starts highlighted by a six length debut win before ending his Australian career with two outstanding efforts at Group 1 level.

Stepping up the 1600m of the Group 1 Australian Guineas, the son of Fastnet Rock was defeated by a length and three quarters by Palentino and Tarzino with the beaten brigade including Group 1 winners Jameka, Vanbrugh, Xtravagant, Tivaci and Perfect Reflection.

Heading back to Sydney he took on a class field in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas at his first try at 2000m, finishing fifth to Tarzino, beating home last start Group 1 Randwick Guineas winner Le Romain with ease.

Identified by Premier Racing Partnerships as an ideal candidate for Singapore, the now named Elite Excalibur was purchased from Coolmore Australia and races for the Elite Performance Stable.

Having won on his Singapore debut in November last year, the decision was made to send Elite Excalibur to Dubai for the carnival where he performed with distinction in his five runs, finishing behind some of the biggest names in racing including last week’s Group 1 Grand Prix De Saint-Cloud winner Zarak.

Kicking off in May back in Singapore, Elite Excalibur returned straight back to his winning ways, scoring by two lengths over 1400m.

With almost a month between runs, having a trial in between, the Cliff Brown-trained Elite Excalibur stepped up to 1600m of the Patron’s Bowl and recorded an impressive final sectional to finish a short head in second behind Alibi, who he will once again meet in Sunday’s Group 1 Singapore Derby (2000m).

Drawn barrier 14 of 15 runners, jockey Michael Rodd will need to be on his ‘A’ game to take the prize, but we are confident that Elite Excalibur has all the attributes to give the Premier Racing Partnerships their first Group 1 winner.
