Private Purchase Chocante Scores For Baertschiger

Forming a great working partnership with private purchases from Australia, Shane Baertschiger’s Chocante, a son of Coolmore’s Champion Sire Fastnet Rock, opened his Singapore account on Sunday night in impressive style on the polytrack.

Named Fill Fill in Australia as part of the Hawkes Racing team, the gelding recorded a second placing from just two starts before purchased privately by Premier Racing Partnerships to head to Singapore.

A debut fifth in September was followed by two trial performances before a length second over 1100m in mid-October.

With Barend Vorster taking the ride on Sunday night, the three-year-old settle third last in the field with jockey content to keep him wide and out of trouble.

As the field charged towards the final bend, Vorster asked the gelding to improve, and he did with ease, circling the field and at the point of the turn was extremely wide, but had only two runners ahead of him.

The Tianzhou Stable-owned Chocante pulled away to take the victory by just shy of two lengths in what was an impressive performance of a horse going places.

While it has taken a few starts for Baertschiger to figure out his three-year-old, it has now all come together.

“I got it all wrong at his first run with the blinkers and running him up on the speed. He overraced,” said Baertschiger.

“We took him back to the trials, took of the blinkers and he was a lot more settled. I put him in that Initiation race and he was firing on the tracks.

“He was caught three wide at the back, but I did tell Barend (Vorster) to grab hold of him as he will jump and run. He will keep improving for sure.”

Special congratulations to the winning connections.
